Leaders cannot simply proclaim a workplace as a safe space; they must actively create it through consistent actions and behaviours.
This removes its stigma and encourages risk-taking and innovation. For example, gather teams to reflect on mistakes and discuss improvements over a celebratory drink.
Actively create environments where every team member feels seen, heard, and valued.
Leaders should be genuinely tuned in to their team's well-being and communicate openly and honestly, particularly during periods of change.
Authenticity is contagious, and when leaders role model vulnerability, others are more likely to follow. Sharing how you learned and moved forward can inspire your team and create a safe space for others to do the same.
All of these efforts must be applied consistently to build trust and create a truly psychologically safe environment.
